The holiday season brings new gifts to fill the home, but is also about giving to others less fortunate. If you are needing to declutter or simply want to pay it forward and provide new gifts to those in need, check out these local organizations you can donate to.
The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is one of America’s most trusted charity organizations. You may recognize the red buckets and bell ringing in front of your favorite stores during the holiday season- these are Salvation Army volunteers collecting donations for those in need. You can donate cash to any of these buckets, or directly donate furniture, clothing and other goods at any of the locations mentioned here.
SafeHomes of Augusta
Since 1983, SafeHomes has aimed to help women, children and men who have been victims of domestic violence. They accept tax-deductible financial donations and also have online wish lists and local “donate days”. Visit here for a complete list of all the ways you can donate.
Hope House
The goal of Hope House is to provide shelter and services to women and their families who struggle with substance abuse and mental health challenges. They help them grow in self-sufficiency and provide treatment to break the destructive cycles of addiction. Click here to make a financial donation and contact the Hope House for more information on product donations and volunteer opportunities.
Helping Hands Thrift Store
The Helping Hands Thrift Store is part of the Columbia County Foundation for Children which gives children in Columbia County a chance to “shop” with dignity where they may not have a chance to otherwise. They accept gently-used clothing and other items and have the building set up as a store for children to pick what they need for themselves. Not only can you donate items, you can also shop at the store yourself and proceeds will go back into the Foundation to further their efforts in the community. Visit the link above for hours, location and more info.
Habitat for Humanity
Donations to Habitat for Humanity help others build strength, stability and self-reliance. Financial donations can also go towards building homes for those in need. The Habitat ReStore is a thrift store that accepts donations of new or gently-used household goods, materials and appliances to support Habitat for Humanity building operations. Click here for more information and donation specifics.
These are just a few of the many donation opportunities in the area. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to travel to a foreign country to make a difference! Helping those in your own neighborhood can be more meaningful than you know. Happy giving season!
